Andy McCann

Andy McCann went from the youngest assistant head teacher in his County to being one of the most sought after speakers in the UK in a few short years. This was not planned but a twist of fate led Andy down this life-changing path. Andy, who studied sport and physical education, followed his dream and became a physical education teacher – becoming Head of PE; Head of Year; Head of VI and Assistant Head. Andy led his department to win the Midland Bank Sponsored School Sports Award – making them the best performing PE Department in Wales.  Andy coached numerous successful sports teams, including the U18 Welsh Rugby Cup winners. He also lectured at UWIC.

 
It was whilst he was teaching that Andy suffered a serious stroke. Andy left teaching to focus on his recovery – having to learn to walk and talk again. Andy McCann gave 100% to making the full recovery he was determined to achieve and, miraculously he did just that.
 
Andy McCann wrote about his road to recovery from the trauma and horrors of brain injury in the highly acclaimed book 'Stroke Survivor – A Personal Guide to Recovery' which sells world wide. This was nominated for the prestigious 'Glen Dimplex Writers' Award. It was also awarded Daily Mail Health Book of the Week. It was described as a 'feel good read'. Andy is a commissioned writer for publications as diverse as the Times Education Supplement, Fighting Fit, Rugby World and FitPro Magazines.
 
Andy McCann was awarded a UK Courage Award for his response to the stroke.  Andy's charity work includes being First Chair of the ASSET (assisting stroke services and enhancing treatment) at Cardiff & Vales NHS Trust; he serves on the Committee for the Stroke Association in Wales, he is a supporter of Guide Dogs and is a registered dog boarder for 'dogs in training'.
 
Andy is very much in demand as an adviser, mentor and mental skills performance coach to high performing individuals from many walks of life, including  World Champions and some of the UK's highest profile international sports stars and coaches.  Andy accompanied the Welsh Rugby Team to New Zealand during the 2011 Rugby World Cup.  His work has been described as 'cutting edge' (Daily Telegraph, 2009) and he is regularly featured in the national press and on TV and radio.
 
Andy is working closely with Sports Coach UK on a range of High Performance Projects and is contributing to the Inspire and Aspire programmes for coaches and athletes with a realistic podium place at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
 
Andy is a keen swimmer, rugby player and skier; he devoted 20 years to developing martial arts skills which involved in international and World Championship events as a competitor, coach and referee. He is a high ranking practitioner with blackbelt grades in several disciplines.
 
Andy McCann is constantly being called upon to appear on television and radio and speaks widely at various national events (education, sport, corporate, health) with an accessible style drawing from an expertise and personal experience, which includes over 25 years experience of education, business, neuropsychology and elite sports performance Andy is an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine.
