Anthony Hughes Deputy Chief Executive of BACS

Anthony has led an extremely interesting life which spans from sweeping floors in Halfords to being in charge of all the UK’s electronic payments and meeting people like Prince Charles along the way!

Now living in Swansea part of the year but spending his Summers at his home in Greece where he gives people ‘Mamma Mia’ boat trips, pointing out the special landmarks and showing them where various songs were filmed.

Between his days in Halfords and his semi-retirement in Swansea, Anthony has had an extremely diverse career encompassing the following:-

 
• Assistant General Manager of an insurance company in London
• Helped set up one of the UK’s first organisational change consultancies where he helped companies such as Glaxo, Exxon, Abbey National, Woolwich, the Inland Revenue and various others.
• Deputy Chief Executive of BACS, with operational responsibility for some 5 billion payments p.a. – worth about £4 trillion.
• Helped set up an internet payments company.
• Made a timely intervention in the government’s review of payment systems which changed the face of companies such as BACS, Link and CHAPS.
• Helped set up national payments infrastructures for Romania, Iraq and the Maldives.
 

From helping Swansea U3A by teaching Digital Media ‘for fun’ and setting up our website, Anthony is now chairman in their 25th year.  He is also a member of the Porthcawl Ukulele Band and do one-man shows with his uke and guitar!

 

Anthony has given speeches all over the world and continues to be in great demand.   These include -  China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Holland, France, San Francisco and the Cayman Islands.

Anthony is a member of Price Charles’ Business In The Community initiative.
