Stuart Davies

Stuart Davies (Swansea, Wales, Barbarians)

Stuart Davies was capped at all levels for Welsh Schools before being invited to play for Swansea whilst still a schoolboy. Stuart spent the next 14 years playing for them, a total of over 250 games (mostly at No.8) scoring 84 tries, not all of which came from pushover scrums! Stuart played for the club against the '89 All Blacks, South Africa and Australia, the latter being his finest moment in the Whites' jersey when he captained them to victory over the 1992 Wallabies, who were reigning World Champions.

Stuart also captained Swansea to the Welsh championship in 1993, one of three such titles won during this time, together with the Welsh Cup in 1995. This made Swansea the most successful Welsh club of the 90's.

Stuart played 17 times for Wales (mostly as vice captain) between 1992 and 1998 (despite five knee operations). He eventually had to retire due to a neck injury sustained against France in his last game, at the grand old age of 32! Stuart made his debut in Lansdowne Road, scoring the winning try and also attended the 1995 World Cup (where Ireland had their revenge!)

Stuart Davies captained the Welsh Colleges team and played for the Wales Students team in the inaugural Student World Cup, as well as touring Russia with the Barbarians.

Immediately following his retirement Stuart was invited to do some work for BBC Wales as a 'second voice' on radio match commentary. This work developed rapidly, and during the 2001 World Cup he co-presented a nightly rugby magazine programme with Frances Donovan called 'the World Cup Experience', as well as co-hosting 'Morning of the Match'.

Stuart subsequently moved more towards television work and co-presented HTV's last year of rugby coverage with Ieuan Evans on 'The Front Row'. Stuart has since been a permanent member of the BBC Wales' ScrumV team, as both a pundit and pitch-side reporter, more recently concentrating on 'second voice' commentary.

Stuart Davies writes a weekly rugby column for the South Wales Evening Post and is an established and accomplished 'after dinner' speaker and compere.
