Gareth Rhys Owen


Bilingual BBC Wales Sport Wales presenter, Gareth Rhys Owen, is a very familiar face and voice to Sports fans in Wales and beyond. Gareth also presents S4C’s flagship rugby show ‘Y Clwb Rygbi’ as well as being a regular contributor on BBC’s Scrum V.  He is also a highly valued rugby and cycling commentator for BT Sport, BBC and S4C. With over 10 years’ experience of working in the industry, Gareth, has covered Education, news journalist; reporter/researcher and has also presented news bulletins on BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio Cymru.

Gareth has covered some of the greatest events on the global sporting calendar. He reported on two Commonwealth Games, from the commentary box at the Olympic Games 100m final, from the ringside at some of America’s biggest fights and has travelled all over the world with the Welsh Rugby team working in both English and Welsh. A keen cyclist himself, he has been contracted for next season’s S4C Tour de France. He has also produced tv documentaries and wrote and produced the programme on Gareth Edwards.

Gareth, who gained his degree in politics, was a history teacher before embarking on his successful broadcasting career. He spent several years in Argentina teaching Spanish history.
As well as English, Gareth is fluent in Welsh (first language) and Spanish and has a basic knowledge of French. He makes a great host and an extremely interesting speaker drawing from his vast experience of travelling the world at top sporting events.
